520 $aThis paper examines the impact of drug prices and policies on certain personal and property crimes using state-level time series-cross sectional data. Ex ante, potential results are associated with prominent causal theories that link the trade and consumption of various drugs and alcohol intake to crime.
520 $aResults are consistent with the psychopharmacologic theory with respect to both illicit drug and alcohol use. Specifically, a higher beer tax was found to reduce the rate of violent crimes such as assault and murder. In addition, higher cocaine prices are associated with lower rates of assault and robbery, although they did not significantly impact murder and rape rates.
520 $aUnclear support is found for a theory of systemic violence with respect to drug prices since none of the heroin and cocaine price coefficients had positive signs with respect to violent crimes. In other words, while this research does not make categorical statements about the association of systemic violence with the black market distribution of illicit drugs, the price of drugs does not seem to be the primary mechanism driving this violence.
520 $aResults are consistent with an economic theory of drugs and crime assuming drug demand is relatively responsive to price changes, at least among a subset of users. Findings indicate that a higher price of cocaine can downwardly influence the rates of burglary, robbery, theft and motor vehicle theft as well as assault. With respect to heroin, the price mechanism appears to be less influential in impacting crime.
520 $aContrary to the views of many opponents, "war on drugs" activities that increase the effective price of illicit substances do not generally appear to increase the most common property crimes studied in this research.
